Celebrate Happy Father's Day
When is Father's Day? The third Sunday of June is Dad's time in the sun. And, contrary to what some cynics contend, this Father's Day date was not the invention of a greeting card company - commercial greeting cards as we know them didn't even exist when Sonora Smart Dodd thought up Father's Day in 1909.
Make Father's Day a Date to Remember
1. Pamper him with whatever culinary ceremonies he enjoys most, whether it's breakfast in bed, a burgers-and-beer lunch at the local sports bar, dinner at his favorite four-star restaurant - or all of the above. (After all, a Happy Father's Day comes but once a year.)
2. Eschew the common Father's Day gifts like ties, shirts, golf balls and best-selling thrillers. Instead give him something you know he'd love but isn't likely to buy for himself: perhaps Ella Fitzgerald's songbook collection on CD, a drawing he's been admiring in a local gallery, or an autographed photo of his childhood baseball hero.
3. Look for clues. If he keeps saying he wishes he'd practiced the piano when his mother told him to, sign him up for lessons. If he reads every issue of "Gourmet" Magazine cover to cover, give him a gift certificate for a cooking course - in France, Italy or Switzerland, if you're feeling flush.
4. Give him the ultimate Father's Day gift: your time. Present him with a gift certificate announcing the plan:

Father's Day was the brainchild of Sonora Smart Dodd, whose mother had died giving birth to her. At a time when many widowed men sent their offspring to live with relatives, Sonora's father reared her and her five siblings alone, on a farm in eastern Washington. In 1909, grown and married, Sonora was in church listening to a Mother's Day sermon when the thought struck her that fathers deserved credit, too - especially hers. Through her efforts, Spokane, Washington, held the first Father's Day observance the following year.
By 1924, the custom had spread through the country, and Calvin Coolidge made the first presidential proclamation in support of Father's Day. Nearly 60 years later, President Richard Nixon made it permanent in 1972, when he requested that Congress pass a joint resolution making the third Sunday in June a National Day of Observance in honor of fathers everywhere.
The Bronx is the only New York borough on the mainland of the United States. It was originally part of Westchester County but was gradually annexed by New York City. The Bronx was completely incorporated into New York City in 1898.
The Bronx has a strong character all its own. It is the birthplace of hip hop music, one of the most important truly American musical genres, and home to one of the country's most storied professional baseball teams, the New York Yankees, also known as the "Bronx Bombers." While the southern and central Bronx is mostly comprised of apartment buildings and densely built, the physical environment of the Bronx is much more varied than what is normally portrayed in the popular media. For instance, Riverdale is a residential neighborhood of mostly detached single family homes located on bluffs overlooking the Hudson River. It looks more like a quiet suburb than the "big bad" Bronx. Bronx Park and Van Cortlandt Park are two large and notably tranquil green spaces. City Island, located in Long Island Sound but officially part of the Bronx, reminds people more of a small New England fishing village and is worth a visit.
The Bronx has a reputation as an area of rundown apartment buildings and high crime that is not entirely undeserved but rather dated. But all of these problems have waned in recent years, and indeed, as the South Bronx gentrifies, longtime residents are afraid they may soon be priced out of their neighborhood. While you should exercise precautions if visiting some of the more troubled neighborhoods, dont take the outsiders' word for it when it comes to the Bronx -- explore it and decide for yourself.
One can get into the Bronx from Manhattan and other boroughs (except Staten Island) easily by taking any of several subway lines or by using a limousine service Bronx-style. The Harlem and Hudson Lines of the Metro North commuter railway, which originate in Grand Central Terminal and stop in Harlem at 125 St. and Park Av., also traverse the Bronx, with various stops including Botanic Garden, next to the New York Botanic Garden.
